Product FAQ's

If you have any questions about the our products , please do email info@salcura.co.uk or call 0208 979 3592 and speak to one of our specialised team. Although the answer you are looking for maybe listed below:

How long do Salcura products take to work?

There is no quick and simple answer to this as what works a certain way for one person will work differently for another. However, if you buy a Salcura product for problem skin you will see a marked improvement in the appearance of the affected area within a few days with skin returning to normal in most cases after 6 weeks. Don't forget we have a 30 Day Guarantee on all of our products so if you are not happy with the results within 30 days then you get your money back!

Are your products tested on animals or contain animal derived ingredients?

Salcura products are not tested on animals and contain no ingredients derived from animal sources. For a full breakdown of ingredients (by product) please go to the ingredients section.

Will Salcura products react with me?

Our products contain only 100% natural ingredients and are free from many substances that commonly cause a reaction with people such as parabens, alcohol, lanolin and paraffin. That said, we cannot guarantee our products will not cause a reaction as while unlikely, some people may still have an allergy to the natural ingredients we use. We advise that you check the ingredient list to check if our products contain any ingredients you know you cannot use.

My product solution looks different to the last one I had, why is this?

As our products are natural products, the smell and colour may vary from one batch produced to another. The colour of our product can differ because of the sea buckthorn oil that we use. It can sometimes vary from a pale yellow/white colour to a darker yellow/orange colour. This is will not alter the efficacy or the texture of the product.

What are the age restrictions on Salcura products?

As our products contain no nasties, all products can be used by those aged 12 months and over with some able to be used from birth. On each product page there are clear usage guidelines that include age recommendations too.

Can I use Salcura products if I'm pregnant or breast-feeding?

All the ingredients we use are not known to have any side effects related to pregnancy or breast-feeding. As such we consider our products to be safe. That said, generally speaking there is very little data around use during pregnancy of most products on the market so if you have any doubts at all we recommend taking some advice from your doctor.

Which preservatives do we use in our products?

Salcura products have always been formulated with a large variety of natural ingredients that would have huge benefits for skin health. The unique combination of different oils, minerals and vitamins made for a well balanced solution of essential nutrients for the skin that would aid the skin in its own self healing and repair process. In order to deal with some of the symptoms associated with problem skin like /, psoriasis, itchy and dry skin it is important to deal with an element of bacterial infection and indeed reduce the risk of spreading bacteria. This usually occurs through the itch scratch cycle which further damages skin and spreads bacteria on open skin.

Essential oils like tea tree oil and manuka oil, which all have scientific proof of their capabilities of being anti-bacterial and anti-microbial therefore serve as a great function in not only being ideal for dealing with the symptoms on the skin but also as the preservative system within the products. However, in order to ensure some of the highest standards in regulatory compliance and safety we do use other supporting preservatives with highly documented evidence of their safe use on skin as well as being skin friendly and highly effective. For example our Zeoderm Skin Repair Moisturiser contains Phenoxyethanol which is a widely used and recognised ingredient.

Phenoxyethanol can be found naturally in green tea, but the commercial ingredient is synthetically produced in a laboratory creating what's termed a "nature identical" chemical. Specifically, it's created by treating phenol with ethylene oxide in an alkaline medium which all reacts to form a pH-balanced ingredient. We use phenoxyethanol in a very low concentration as a preservative in some but not all of our products because the most accessible alternatives for these types of formulas include parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Both are classes of chemicals with demonstrable evidence of potential health risks, whereas phenoxyethanol is very safe at low levels. It's been tested on the skin and eyes and it is non-irritating and non-sensitizing at levels of 2.2% or lower while being effective at only 1% concentrations. The European Union and Japan both approve its use up to that 1% level and our formulas fall well below the recommendation at 0.5% or less (depending on the specific product).

One of the key reasons we use Phenoxyethanol in particular is because it is Ecocert and Soil Association approved - these two organisations put a huge amount of resources behind researching and validating ingredients and so we trust their well-informed judgement. What's more, it's included in the Handbook of Green Chemicals and is also Whole Foods Premium Body Care approved. Their standards, developed by a team of scientists over the course of many years, are some of the strictest available. If these two credible sources give it a thumbs-up, we do too.

We'd like to point out a study that helped inform our decision to use it - a study conducted on pre-term newborn babies finding a phenoxyethanol-based antiseptic as the preferred, gentle formula that's quickly metabolized by even a premature baby's system. Now, we're not trying to write-off our customers concerns about this ingredient - honestly, it's not perfect, but there are not many preservatives that are. Even alcohol, a naturally occurring ingredient, can be harsh and has its limitations.

What percentage of our ingredients would be considered organic?

The term organic is a widely used term in natural skincare and is a trend in skincare that many followed however there seems to be confusion around what this really means. Is a product "organic" or is it "made with organic' or is it claiming to "contain organic"? All of these variations are used by manufacturers and brands and in principle the policing of these terms has been difficult.

At Salcura we would consider the majority of our product to be indeed "organic" as the majority of our products are made with over 95% organic ingredients and the other 5% fall in line with the standards that for example the USDA National Organic Program sets out. We know this because as general rule of thumb all our products have an active natural ratio of over 9:1. Salcura products are always formulated using the best quality and best sourced natural ingredients to deliver a specific purpose and a breakdown of our formulations will reveal that our products are principally over 95% natural and indeed organic. As a brand we are actively moving towards getting our whole range certified to the highest standards in order for there to be no confusion. The promise that we give all our customers is that we ensure our products are made of organic agricultural materials grown using earth-friendly practices without toxic or persistent pesticides and the remaining 5% only contain carefully vetted substances from a short list of approved additives.

Would Salcura products be considered Vegan?

Since all Salcura products are formulated following a philosophy of only natural plant derived ingredients that make for high quality essential oil, vitamin and mineral solutions it would be very hard to find a product that could not be considered suitable for vegans.
There are some very slight exceptions to the rule where a vegan may consider not using our products. For example Beeswax could be considered as an ingredient that vegans may not use. Beeswax is an animal 'by-product' as it comes from the honeycomb made by busy bees.
Lanolin is another great ingredient which originates from lamb's wool and is used in some haircare and skincare products and we too use it in a very small number of our products at a concentration usually of less than 0,5%.

Are Salcura products biodegradable?

Without a shadow of a doubt, our products are biodegradable. All Salcura formulations are earth friendly recipes and would not be harmful to the world. Unfortunately, the packaging is something we have much less control over and to be able to use biodegradable packaging across our whole range is theoretically impossible. For example our Dermaspray range is packaged in a bottle with a spray head pump. Inside this pump will be a small spring that makes the head move up and down and this spring is made of a metal. In these instance we would very much struggle to offer our unique spray solutions in a spray format. However, generally our sourcing takes the biodegradable question into account and we work with the most ethical suppliers who are on top of the latest technologies and innovations in packaging.

Why do we use Phenoxyethanol?

To provide you with a bit of background information, Phenoxyethanol can be found naturally in green tea, but the commercial ingredient is synthetically produced in a laboratory creating what’s termed a “nature identical” chemical.

We use this particular ingredient as it helps fight and reduce bacteria. Most of our products are made with water and a variety of nutrients which all derive from the essential oils, which can make an incredibly hospitable breeding ground for microorganisms.

We use phenoxyethanol in a very low concentration as a preservative because the most accessible alternatives for these types of formulas include parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, which we avoid using before our products are manufactured. Both are classes of chemicals with demonstrable evidence of potential health risks, whereas phenoxyethanol is very safe at low levels. It’s been tested to ensure the safety of use around the skin and eyes and it is non-irritating and non-sensitizing at our manufacturing levels of > 0.5% – < 1.0%. Even better, phenoxyethanol doesn’t react with other ingredients, air, or light. This kind of stability makes it an especially effective preservative.

Will the products stain my clothes?

Unlike products containing ingredients such as Benzoyl Peroxide, Salcura products will not “bleach” fabrics. You should expect no discolouring from the products as they contain only natural ingredients but, as with all liquids, avoid placing the bottles on delicate surfaces etc.

What is the shelf life of the products

Typically 12 months after opening, but check individual product labels. We don’t use synthetic preservatives to extend the product shelf life.
