Summer tips for your little one

Summer is a much-awaited season for spending time outdoors with your children and engaging in fun activities. However, increased sun exposure can be disruptive to younger skin, especially for kids with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. That’s why we have compiled some essential tips to make sure your child has an amazing holiday while staying protected and nourished under the sun:

Hydration is key: At Salcura, we believe in nourishing and feeding the skin from the inside. Always carry plenty of fresh, cold water with you in your journeys and treat your child to refreshing fluids such as lemonades and fruit juices. To make it even more exciting, invest in a colourful water bottle / sipper featuring their favourite cartoon character to encourage them to drink more!

Optimise sun protection: You probably already know how essential SPF is, especially for young skin. Apply SPF30 or higher at least 30 minutes before going outside and aim to reapply every 2 hours. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF as it protects against UVA and UVB rays. If your child gets sunburn, use a gentle cooling spray and moisturiser to aid the skin’s healing process. Our easy-to-use Bioskin Junior Daily Nourishing Spray sinks deep into the skin and feeds it with nutrients, helping it become stronger and itch-free. Before bedtime, apply the Bioskin Junior Outbreak Rescue Cream to detoxify and deeply repair the skin overnight.

Ward off sweat: Sweat is one of the biggest triggers for eczema, as it contains minerals which can irritate the skin if they build up. Since sweating is inevitable during outdoor play, we suggest using wet towels to rinse off sweat from the back of the knees, inside of elbows or back of neck, where it usually accumulates.

Say no to chlorine: This harsh chemical can trigger dry or eczema prone skin. Where possible, consider choosing ozone filtered or saltwater pools, which are gentler on the skin. Either way, make sure your child showers with fresh, clean water after swimming and applies a moisturiser for sensitive skin to avoid flare-ups. Our Bioskin Rescue Cream contains 10 different natural oils and extracts like zeolite, castor, and olive, that help bind moisture into the skin and relieve irritations.

Dress light and bright: Keep your little one cool and dry by dressing them in light and natural fabrics like hemp, bamboo, and cotton. For children with eczema, bamboo is a perfect option due to its antibacterial quality. Opt for light coloured clothing as they don’t absorb sunlight as much as dark colours. Also, protect their eyes and scalp with a wide-brimmed hat and UV400 sunglasses.

Don’t forget the hair: Children can sweat excessively from their scalp, creating a breeding ground for bacterial buildup. To prevent further irritations, use a natural, gentle shampoo to wash your child’s scalp. Our Bioskin Junior Shampoo is made with skin-loving ingredients that feed the scalp with nutrients and nourish severely sensitive skin.

Prioritise shade: While Vitamin D is recuperating for the skin, constant sun exposure can lead to dry skin flare-ups. Opt for shade options by installing sunlight shades in your car windows and carrying hats or sun umbrellas during your outdoor activities. Try to avoid the sun between 10am-4pm.

Summer holidays should be fun and exciting, so we understand how difficult it can be if your child struggles with very sensitive or eczema-prone skin. The good news is, if you follow these simple tips and pack these summer essentials, your little one can enjoy their favourite summer activities flare-up free!
